Govardhan Puja 2026 and Bhai Dooj 2026 Dates Explained
In most years Govardhan Puja falls the day after Diwali and Bhai Dooj the day after that. In 2026 the lunar tithis fall differently. In India, Diwali's Amavasya is followed by Pratipada (the Govardhan tithi) on 10 November, and Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj) on 11 November. For many families this leaves Monday, 9 November as a quiet in-between day. Outside India, for example in the US or UK, both festivals fall one day earlier because sunrise times differ. As always, timings vary by city, so check your local panchang or ask your family pandit.

The Story and Significance of Govardhan Puja
The people of Vrindavan once prepared a grand offering to Indra, the rain god. Young Krishna asked them to honour instead Govardhan Hill, which fed their cows and sheltered their village. Angered, Indra unleashed torrential rain. Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan Hill on the little finger of his left hand and held it up for seven days, giving shelter to every person and animal. Indra eventually realised his pride and bowed to Krishna.
The festival carries a message that feels very modern: respect nature, the land and the animals that sustain us, and let go of ego. Astrologically, it is fitting that this falls while the Sun, the planet of ego and authority, is debilitated in Libra.
Annakut: the mountain of food
"Annakut" means a mountain of food. Families and temples, especially in Mathura, Vrindavan and Nathdwara, prepare dozens of vegetarian dishes, sometimes 56 (Chhappan Bhog), and arrange them as a hill before Lord Krishna. At home, even a few simple dishes made with love are enough: a mixed-vegetable sabzi (often called Annakut ki sabzi), kadhi, rice, puri and a sweet.
How to do Govardhan Puja at home
- In the courtyard or on a clean board, make a small symbolic Govardhan hill. Cow dung is traditional; clay or flowers work beautifully too.
- Decorate it with flowers, small diyas, and figures of cows and Krishna.
- Offer water, roli, rice, kheel-batashe, milk and the Annakut dishes.
- Walk around the hill (parikrama) seven times while chanting "Govardhan Dharan Ki Jai" or "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya".
- Honour cows if possible: feed them green fodder or jaggery and roti. Share the Annakut prasad with neighbours and those in need.
In parts of Maharashtra and the South, this day is also celebrated as Bali Pratipada, honouring King Bali. In Gujarat, the Pratipada is welcomed as the new year (Bestu Varas). Different regions, one spirit of gratitude.
Bhai Dooj 2026: The Festival of Siblings
Bhai Dooj is known by many names: Bhaiya Dooj, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phonta in Bengal, Bhai Tika in Nepal, and Yama Dwitiya in the scriptures. Sisters apply tilak to their brothers and pray for their long life, and brothers promise to protect and support their sisters. Today many families celebrate it among all siblings, sisters with sisters and brothers with brothers.
The stories behind Bhai Dooj
Yama and Yamuna: Yamraj, the lord of death, had not visited his sister Yamuna for a long time. When he finally came on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, she welcomed him with a tilak, aarti and a lavish meal. Touched, Yama granted a boon: any brother who receives tilak from his sister on this day will be free from the fear of untimely death. That is why the day is called Yama Dwitiya.
Krishna and Subhadra: after defeating the demon Narakasura, Krishna visited his sister Subhadra, who greeted him with flowers, sweets and a tilak on his forehead. Many families retell this story as the origin of the festival.
Bhai Dooj tilak vidhi
- Prepare a thali with roli or kumkum, akshat (rice), a diya, a few sweets, a dry coconut (gola) or betel leaf, and some flowers.
- Many families make a small square with rice flour on the floor for the brother to sit on, often facing north or east.
- The sister applies tilak with roli and rice, ties kalava (sacred thread) if that is the family custom, and performs aarti.
- She offers sweets, and in some traditions a gola or paan. The brother gives a gift and his blessings or promise of support.
- Families traditionally share a meal together. Brothers often eat at the sister's home, as Yama did at Yamuna's.
Bhai Dooj tilak muhurat 2026: the afternoon period (Aparahna) of Dwitiya is traditionally preferred. The exact window depends on your city's sunrise and the tithi, so please check your local panchang. If you live far apart, a video call with a tilak on a photograph and a heartfelt prayer is still meaningful.
11/11 and Mercury: The Numerology of Bhai Dooj 2026
In India, Bhai Dooj 2026 falls on 11 November, the much-talked-about 11:11 date. The full date adds to 11 + 11 + 10 = 32 β 5, the number of Mercury. In Vedic astrology, Mercury is a key significator of siblings (especially younger ones), communication, and the 3rd house of courage and siblings. It is hard to imagine a more fitting number for Bhai Dooj.
There is one more layer. Mercury is retrograde until 13 November 2026, so it is still retrograde on Bhai Dooj. Retrograde Mercury favours everything with "re": reconnecting, repairing, revisiting. If there is distance or an old misunderstanding with a sibling, this Bhai Dooj is an ideal day to make the first call. I have explored the 11:11 date more deeply in 11:11 portal 2026 numerology meaning.

Find each sibling's Mulank (birth day reduced to one digit) with our free Mulank & Bhagyank calculator. Then see which planetary "family" each number belongs to:
| Group | Mulank (planet) | Sibling style |
|---|---|---|
| Fire and light | 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 9 Mars | Warm, protective, expressive, and sometimes competitive for attention |
| Earth and intellect | 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 8 Saturn | Practical, witty, loyal, showing love through doing rather than saying |
| Flexible | 7 Ketu | Quiet, intuitive, the sibling others confide in |
- Same group: you understand each other with few words, but you may also share the same blind spots.
- Different groups: you complement each other. One brings warmth, the other practicality, though you may need to explain yourselves more.
- A Mulank 7 sibling often acts as the peacemaker, and gets along with both groups when given space.
This is a light-hearted lens, not a verdict. Every sibling relationship can flourish with patience. For a fuller picture between any two people, the compatibility calculator can also be a fun conversation starter.
